Making the most of annual leave in 2027 can feel challenging for frequent travelers, but strategic planning can help maximize time off. Alesia Fiddler, a travel reporter, outlines methods to extend vacation days by leveraging the year's bank holidays.

In 2027, there will be eight bank holidays. These include New Year's Day on January 1, Good Friday on March 26, Easter Monday on March 29, Early May Day on May 3, and the Spring Bank Holiday on May 31. The Summer Bank Holiday falls on August 30, with Christmas Day observed on December 27 and Boxing Day on December 28, as both dates land on weekends in 2027.

By strategically booking days off around these holidays, individuals can extend their breaks. For instance, the Easter period, from March 26 to March 29, can be extended to ten days off by taking an additional four days of leave from March 30 to April 2. The May bank holidays offer opportunities for long weekends; taking April 30 or May 28 as annual leave can provide four days off using just one day of paid leave.

For the Summer Bank Holiday on August 30, booking August 27 and August 31 off would result in a five-day break by using two days of annual leave. The Christmas period can also be optimized. Taking December 24 and December 29 off would grant six days away from work. With additional leave, December 30 and 31 could also be taken, totaling eleven days off.

Research from the previous year analyzed over 230,000 annual leave requests for summer 2025 to identify the most popular times for holidays. The week commencing August 4 was the most frequently requested period, with 17.51% of all requests. The second most popular week was August 18, accounting for 16.72% of requests. Following these were the weeks commencing July 28 and August 11, with 16.55% and 16.53% of requests respectively.
