Former SportsCenter anchor Max McGee has spoken publicly about his termination from ESPN, which occurred in 2024 following a workplace investigation stemming from a complaint by a female colleague. McGee, who was hired by the network in January 2022, took to Instagram two years after his dismissal to share his perspective.
In a video message to his followers, McGee stated that he was terminated at the conclusion of an investigation but was never provided with specific details about the complaint. "I asked questions, I looked for answers, and I left that process with more uncertainty than clarity," he said. He did not directly address the nature of the complaint in his remarks.
McGee explained that he had remained largely silent for the past two years, not because he had nothing to say, but because he believed it was the appropriate course of action. He described the experience as difficult, noting that his job at ESPN was something he had worked towards for years. "Now, suddenly, it was gone," he reflected.
He emphasized that his intention in sharing his story was not to attack or blame anyone, nor was he seeking sympathy. Instead, he felt compelled to speak out because the silence had allowed others to define his narrative. McGee admitted to experiencing self-doubt, anger, embarrassment, and disappointment, and had questioned whether he would work in television again.
Despite the lack of closure and a clear explanation, McGee stated he had learned that sometimes the only decision one can make is whether to move forward. He concluded his message by asserting that this was not the end of his story, but merely a chapter. McGee's initial hiring at ESPN was met with acclaim, highlighting his journey as a college dropout who achieved a prominent position in sports broadcasting. Prior to ESPN, he worked as a sports anchor at WJZ-TV in Baltimore.
