Pastor and author Max Lucado has discussed his Fox Nation special, 'A Call to Unbreakable Courage,' emphasizing how faith and scripture can equip individuals to confront fear and anxiety in a rapidly changing world.
Lucado suggested that many people feel overwhelmed by the challenges of contemporary life, likening the feeling to being outnumbered and outmatched. He noted that the current era can feel tumultuous, with societal shifts and pervasive anxieties contributing to a sense of instability. "Chaos. Anxiety. Exhaustion. Fear. The white-knuckling tumbles through this unpredictable life," he stated, adding that "in a historical blink of an eye, we are shedding old beliefs and grasping for new ones. What was once unthinkable is acceptable today."
He drew a parallel between these modern sentiments and the experiences of the Old Testament prophet Elijah. Lucado highlighted Elijah's difficult circumstances in ninth-century B.C. Israel, a period characterized by corrupt leadership and widespread idol worship. He presented Elijah's story as a blueprint for maintaining faith and courage even when faced with overwhelming odds, citing the prophet's confrontation with 850 prophets of Baal as an example of extreme adversity.
Lucado shared the story of LeeAdianez Rodriguez-Espada, a 12-year-old who mistakenly ran a half-marathon instead of the 5K she had intended. Despite the unexpected challenge, she chose to complete the longer race, illustrating a spirit of perseverance. "That's all God wants of us," Lucado remarked. "We need not finish first or fast or without foibles or fumbles. We just need to finish."
He encouraged readers to recognize that even amidst feelings of being alone against the world, individuals of faith are not without support. "Surrounded by adversity? Perhaps. Yet, you are also encircled by divinity," he stated. Lucado's latest book, 'Unbreakable Courage: Strong Faith in an Age of Anxiety, Chaos and Exhaustion,' was released on August 11, 2026.
With over 150 million books in print, Lucado, often referred to as "America's Pastor," has authored more than 40 works. His writings have been translated into 56 languages and frequently appear on bestseller lists.
