Matty J Johnson Addresses Sam Wood Domestic Violence Allegations: 'I Feel Ashamed'

Matty 'J' Johnson, a former contestant on The Bachelor, has publicly addressed the domestic violence allegations against fellow Bachelor alumnus Sam Wood. In a statement shared on Instagram, Johnson, 39, expressed shame for having once admired Wood, 46, and reflected on the disconnect between public image and true character.

Johnson clarified that he and Wood are not close friends, stating their interactions have been limited to a few encounters stemming from their shared appearance on the reality dating show. He described Wood's public persona as an aspirational benchmark during his late twenties, citing Wood's seemingly successful family life, businesses, and reputation as a "stand-up bloke." Johnson admitted his perception was largely shaped by Wood's curated social media presence.

The allegations against Wood include charges of domestic violence involving his wife, Snezana. Court documents allege Wood pushed his wife into a wardrobe, grabbed her by the throat, threw her against a wall, and struck her head against the floor. Snezana reportedly feared for her life during the incident. Wood has denied the allegations, with his legal team indicating a defense of self-defense.

Johnson stated he was shocked by the claims but acknowledged the pervasive nature of domestic violence. He questioned his own surprise, noting that he, like many, had naively believed he could identify individuals prone to such acts. The allegations, he said, have prompted a reevaluation of his understanding of success, masculinity, and what constitutes a good man. "The measure of a man has never been the car he drives, the money he makes or the image he projects to the world. It is how he treats people, and even more so – how he treats people when no one is watching," Johnson wrote.

Johnson's statement comes after he faced criticism for his initial silence on the matter. An activist account, Warrior for Animals, contrasted his perceived inaction with that of another Bachelor star, Matt Agnew, who publicly condemned domestic violence. Fellow reality TV personality Angie Kent also questioned why public figures who promote family values were not speaking out against such serious charges.

Johnson urged men to take greater responsibility in challenging harmful attitudes and behaviors. He emphasized the need for men to do more than simply state opposition to domestic violence, advocating for self-reflection and a critical examination of outdated ideas about masculinity that equate strength with control. He stressed the importance of teaching boys that respect extends beyond public interactions and includes how they treat others when feeling angry or powerless.

Johnson's wife, Laura Byrne, who appeared on the same season of The Bachelor as Johnson, had previously addressed the allegations on her podcast, Life Uncut. She highlighted how domestic violence can affect individuals across all social strata, regardless of wealth or public profile.

Wood remains in custody after his bail was refused. The court heard that police had previously attended a similar incident involving the couple in Victoria. Photographs of Snezana's alleged injuries were presented in court. Wood is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
