Mattress Mack Suffers Significant Loss on Astros Bet
Jim "Mattress Mack" McIngvale's wager on the Houston Astros to win the World Series resulted in a $516,000 loss after the team was swept in the Wild Card round.
Jim “Mattress Mack” McIngvale, owner of Gallery Furniture in Houston, experienced a substantial financial setback after placing a $516,000 bet on the Houston Astros to win the World Series. The bet, made on Kalshi at approximately 24/1 odds, was expected to yield $13 million. However, the Astros were swept by the White Sox in the Wild Card round, concluding the wager within 48 hours and resulting in the loss of the initial investment.
McIngvale had stated that the bet was intended to cover approximately $4 million in sales from a promotion offering customers a refund on purchases of $4,000 or more if the Astros won the championship. He anticipated this promotion could potentially lead to $12 million in sales if the team performed well.
The Astros' early exit from the playoffs was particularly disappointing as the team finished the regular season with an 81-81 record, the worst among all playoff teams in MLB history. This performance led to fan dissatisfaction, with reports of low attendance and boos directed at the team during the Wild Card Series games.
McIngvale has a history of making large sports bets to incentivize sales. In 2019, he lost $10 million on the Astros in the World Series but reportedly generated about $20 million in revenue from a related promotion. Similarly, in 2022, a $9.5 million bet on the Bengals to win the Super Bowl was said to have brought in $20 million in sales. Earlier that year, he lost $6.1 million on the Alabama Crimson Tide to win the College Football National Championship, a promotion he also claimed was profitable.
However, the rapid elimination of the Astros this year marks one of McIngvale's more costly short-term losses, especially if the anticipated sales from the promotion did not materialize to offset the bet. It remains unclear if this particular promotion was profitable for McIngvale.
