Matthew Stafford Still Finds Monday Night Football Exciting Ahead of Giants Matchup
The veteran Rams quarterback looks forward to the primetime spotlight despite his 18th NFL season.
Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford, in his 18th NFL season at the age of 38, admitted that Monday Night Football continues to be a significant motivator for him.
"I love playing on Monday nights," Stafford said. "Monday Night Football has always meant something in this league. We all grew up watching it and it’s fun to be a part of it."
Stafford and the Rams are preparing to host the New York Giants in their home opener at SoFi Stadium, looking to rebound from a disappointing 27-7 Week 1 loss to the San Francisco 49ers in Melbourne, Australia. The Rams' offense struggled in that game, failing to build rhythm or execute effectively.
Head coach Sean McVay expressed a desire to put the Australia game behind them, humorously referencing the memory-erasing device from the movie "Men in Black." "I just want to be present now and move forward," McVay stated. "It’s almost like you try to do the ‘Men in Black’ thing where you say, ‘all right, I don’t remember what happened.’"
McVay acknowledged the challenge posed by the Giants' defense, describing them as a team that "play with their hair on fire." He emphasized the need for the Rams to match or exceed that intensity.
While Stafford embraces the spotlight of Monday Night Football, he also recognizes the logistical challenges. "Obviously, the scheduling part of it is a little unique and a little difficult," he said. "You get an extra day on the front end, but it cuts into the following week and your recovery time for the next game."
Despite the physical toll of a long career, the allure of the primetime stage remains strong for Stafford. "It’s still Monday Night Football. The nationally televised game when everyone is home from work and ready to watch some football. The theme music hits, the stadium lights burn brighter and for three hours, there’s only one game that owns the stage," he reflected.
For Stafford, who grew up watching these games, the opportunity to still play in them after nearly two decades in the league is something he values. The upcoming Monday night contest offers a familiar and welcome stage for the Rams to reset their season.
