Matthew Schaefer Named Islanders Assistant Captain in Significant Move

The New York Islanders have named 19-year-old forward Matthew Schaefer as one of the team's four assistant captains for the upcoming season. This designation underscores the significant trust and leadership potential recognized in the young player by the coaching staff.

Schaefer will share assistant captain duties with Kyle Palmieri for home games, while Ryan Pulock and Brayden Schenn will wear the alternate "A" during road contests. This rotation ensures consistent leadership presence throughout the season.

The appointment aligns with preseason expectations, where coach Pete DeBoer had publicly referred to Schaefer as a "future captain." While Bo Horvat was named the team's captain, Schaefer was reportedly a strong consideration for that role as well. His selection as an assistant captain at such a young age places him among peers who are already established leaders.

DeBoer commented earlier in training camp on Schaefer's maturity and respect within the locker room, stating, "It shows you how special a kid he is that he was a consideration. Otherwise, his name never would have been ever mentioned, so that shows you already the respect the group has for him, the respect the team has for him and how he carries himself. He’s so mature beyond his years. He was definitely a consideration."

The coach also indicated that the team would rely on a broader leadership group beyond those wearing official letters, mentioning Adam Pelech and Mat Barzal as integral parts of this extended leadership council.

In other team news, Schaefer, along with Schenn and Tony DeAngelo, participated in practice after missing the previous session. The team appears to be maintaining its established lines and defensive pairings as the season approaches. Ilya Sorokin is expected to start in goal for Wednesday's game against the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Rookie Victor Eklund has switched his jersey number from 73 to 38. Meanwhile, Mat Barzal, who is recovering from a left kneecap injury, has not yet begun skating but is traveling with the team and attending meetings. Coach DeBoer described his recovery as being "around the corner."
