Matthew Rhys, who made history at the recent Emmy Awards by securing two leading actor trophies, has stated his intention to store the awards in his basement. Rhys revealed in a backstage interview that he made a promise to his partner, Keri Russell, that he would not display his Emmys until she wins one herself.

Rhys was honored for his roles in "The Beast in Me" and "Widow's Bay." Despite winning two awards, he did not mention Russell in his acceptance speeches, a decision that surprised viewers given their long-term relationship, which began while they starred together in "The Americans." He did, however, acknowledge his "The Beast in Me" co-star Claire Danes.

Russell, who was nominated for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series for her role in "The Diplomat," did not win her category. The award went to Rhea Seehorn for "Pluribus." Fans expressed surprise and disappointment in online comments that Russell had not yet received an Emmy, citing her past acclaimed performances.

Rhys acknowledged the sentiment behind his decision, admitting it might seem "stupid," but highlighted his loyalty to Russell. While Russell did not win an award on Monday night, she was observed cheering and applauding enthusiastically for Rhys during the ceremony.

Rhys's wins mark a significant achievement, making him the first actor to win two leading actor awards in a single night across different categories: drama, comedy, and limited series. He previously won an Emmy for his performance in "The Americans" in 2018. His latest wins include Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie for "The Beast in Me" and Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series for "Widow's Bay."
