Matthew Rhys' former teacher recalls teenage Elvis performance ahead of Emmy win

Matthew Rhys's former music teacher, Delyth Medi Lloyd, has recalled the actor's early talent, stating that his role as Elvis Presley in a 1993 school musical was so compelling that the production was effectively built around him. Rhys, then 18, portrayed Elvis in the Welsh-language school production of "Elfis" at Ysgol Gyfun Gymraeg Glantaf in Cardiff.

Lloyd, 60, told of how Rhys bore an uncanny resemblance to the music icon, with his black, wavy hair and natural stage presence. "He stole the show, singing all the songs. I think the girls were swooning over him," Lloyd remembered. Rhys's dedication to the role was evident, as he reportedly watched videos for hours to perfect Elvis's mannerisms.

Lloyd, who taught at the school from 1989 to 2022, emphasized Rhys's enthusiasm and commitment. "If he was doing something, he would give it 100 percent," she said. The teacher noted that Rhys also possessed a strong singing voice, a talent perhaps influenced by his Welsh heritage, which he has largely kept under wraps in his acting career.

The historical Emmy win for Rhys occurred at the 78th Emmy Awards in Los Angeles, where he became the first man to secure two lead acting awards in the same ceremony. He won Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy for "Widow's Bay" and Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited Series or Movie for "The Beast in Me." Additionally, he shared the outstanding comedy series prize as an executive producer of "Widow's Bay," bringing his Emmy total to four.

Lloyd expressed pride in Rhys's achievements, stating, "I saw the news this morning and it didn't surprise me at all. We're all so proud of Matthew." She recalled his dramatic abilities even then, noting a "twinkle in his eye" and a "very dry" sense of humor.

Rhys's early theatrical experiences at Ysgol Gyfun Gymraeg Glantaf, which had strong links to Eisteddfod festivals, helped nurture his performing arts skills. Lloyd mentioned that Rhys has remained connected to his roots, recalling his support for a local pub campaign and his personal project of restoring a 1939 wooden boat, "Rarebit." Lloyd has since visited Rhys in Los Angeles and even sailed on "Rarebit" with him.

Lloyd also shared memories of meeting Rhys again after his performance in the Welsh National Theatre's "Playing Burton" last year, where she also met fellow actor Michael Sheen. "Matthew has always remembered his roots and his old teachers - he has been wonderful with us whenever we've been out to see him," she said. "He remembers the good old days."
