Matthew Perry's Sister Reflects on 'Friends' Wedding Episode Amid His Addiction Struggles

Matthew Perry’s sister, Mia Perry Bowick, revealed that the wedding episode of his character Chandler Bing on the hit sitcom “Friends” was a bittersweet moment for their family. The family's happiness at seeing Chandler marry Monica was overshadowed by concerns about Perry's ongoing struggles with addiction and the uncertainty of whether he would ever achieve such milestones in his personal life.

"When we saw that wedding, we all knew that he had wanted that in life; he wanted a partner and he wanted children," Bowick told People in a recent interview. "We all knew how serious his disorder was, so there was this sense of, ‘Who knows what’s going to happen?’"

Perry, who died in October 2023 at age 54 from the acute effects of ketamine, never married or had children. His addiction struggles were well-documented, and he spoke openly about them in his 2022 memoir, "Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing."

In the book, Perry described returning to a treatment center immediately after filming the wedding scene for the “Friends” Season 7 finale, which aired in 2001. He wrote that viewers could often gauge the severity of his addiction during the show's run by his physical appearance, noting, "When I’m carrying weight, it’s alcohol; when I’m skinny, it’s pills. When I have a goatee, it’s lots of pills."

Perry had a history of significant relationships, including with Gwyneth Paltrow and Julia Roberts in the 1990s. He also dated actress Lizzy Caplan from 2006 to 2012. In November 2020, he announced his engagement to literary manager Molly Hurwitz, though the couple separated six months later. Perry later admitted in his memoir that he was heavily under the influence when he proposed and did not recall the event.

Bowick is sharing her insights into her brother's life and struggles for the first time in the upcoming Netflix documentary, "The One About Matthew Perry," which premieres on October 27. The three-part series features interviews with Bowick and other close friends of the late actor.

Perry's official cause of death was ruled as acute effects of ketamine, with contributing factors including drowning, coronary artery disease, and the effects of buprenorphine. In August 2024, five individuals, including Perry's assistant Kenneth Iwamasa and Jasveen Sangha, were arrested in connection with the investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death, accused of profiting from his addiction.
