Matthew Perry's Sister Details Grief and Anger in Wake of Actor's Death

Matthew Perry's sister, Mia, has spoken out about her grief and anger following the actor's death in October 2023. Perry, who rose to fame as Chandler Bing on the sitcom Friends, died at age 54 from acute effects of ketamine, with drowning also contributing, according to the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner's office.

In a recent interview and within the Netflix docuseries The One About Matthew Perry, Mia Perry shared the profound emotional toll of witnessing her brother's long battle with addiction. She recalled a particularly harrowing period five years before his death when Matthew nearly died after his colon burst due to opioid overuse, a condition doctors had given him a two percent chance of surviving.

At the time of that near-fatal incident, Mia served as Matthew's power of attorney. She described the immense anxiety and pressure she felt in making critical decisions for her brother while also managing her own postpartum recovery. "In some ways I was really honoured to be able to make these sort of choices for my brother but I also felt this really intense anxiety and pressure," she stated. "I'm away from my baby and post-partum and hormonal and barely functioning."

Mia Perry also detailed the unique grief experienced by families of those struggling with substance abuse. "There's so much grief family members and friends have to sit with when their loved ones are suffering with substance abuse," she said. "There are many layers and aspects to grief and one of them is denial, and I would fall into that denial place often."

Breaking down in tears, she expressed a complex mix of emotions, including anger at her brother for his self-destructive path. "It's a mixture of feeling mad at myself for forgetting that reality, even for a few minutes, certainly angry at him. You did this to yourself, I just had a baby you're supposed to be an uncle right now. It's really, really, really hard," Mia recounted. She noted that while there had been many previous emergencies, including overdoses and car crashes, this particular incident was the first where medical professionals expressed serious doubt about his survival.

Matthew Perry's addiction journey was extensive. He reportedly went to rehab 15 times and attended 6,000 Alcoholics Anonymous meetings. His substance use began at age 14 with alcohol and escalated to prescription opioids, including Vicodin, after a jet-ski accident shortly after joining Friends. By the third season of the show, he was reportedly consuming approximately 55 Vicodin tablets daily, far exceeding the maximum recommended dosage. His struggles continued, leading to a coma in 2018 after his colon burst, requiring him to use a colostomy bag for nine months. Two years later, his heart stopped for five minutes after a sedative administered at a Swiss rehab facility interacted with opioids in his system.

Reflecting on the docuseries about her brother, Mia Perry stated she learned to "hold gratitude and grief simultaneously." Director Mary Robertson commented on Mia's contribution to the series, noting that while her experiences were unique, they held a universal resonance.

Following Matthew Perry's death, five individuals, including his drug counselor, his ketamine supplier, and two doctors, were convicted in connection with his overdose. His long-term assistant was sentenced to over three years in prison for conspiracy to distribute ketamine resulting in death.
