Matthew Perry Documentary 'The One About Matthew Perry' Features Friends, But Not His 'Friends' Co-Stars
Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, and David Schwimmer opted out of the Netflix docuseries, with sources citing the difficulty of reliving Perry's death.
The upcoming Netflix documentary "The One About Matthew Perry" will not feature appearances from Matthew Perry's "Friends" co-stars Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, and David Schwimmer.
A source close to the production told Page Six that while the cast members were approached, they ultimately decided not to participate in the three-part series. Instead, the documentary will highlight other friends and colleagues who shared memories of Perry.
Another insider suggested that for some, like Aniston, the decision stemmed from the emotional toll of revisiting Perry's passing. "She doesn't want to relive it and have it be so public," the source stated.
"The One About Matthew Perry," directed by Mary Robertson, aims to offer an intimate look at the actor's life beyond his iconic role as Chandler Bing. The series includes interviews with Perry's sister, Mia Perry Bowick, who speaks for the first time about her brother's complex life and the legacy he left behind.
Perry, who died at age 54 on October 27, 2023, was found unresponsive in his Pacific Palisades home. The official cause of death was determined to be the acute effects of ketamine, with contributing factors including drowning and issues related to heart disease and the use of buprenorphine. Following his death, five individuals, including his assistant and two doctors, were arrested in connection with his passing and subsequently reached plea deals, with four serving prison sentences.
Perry had been open about his struggles with substance abuse and addiction throughout his life, detailing his journey in his 2022 memoir, "Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing." In the book, he revealed the extensive measures he took for sobriety, including spending over $9 million on rehabilitation.
"I am a survivor," Perry wrote in his memoir. "I have been through hell and back, and I am still here. I want to share my story because I want people to know that they are not alone. There is hope. You can get better."
"The One About Matthew Perry" is scheduled to premiere on October 27, coinciding with the three-year anniversary of the actor's death.
