Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson Share Wild Friendship Anecdotes, Hint at Possible Brotherhood
The longtime friends and co-stars of "Brothers" recount surprising visits, impromptu vacations, and a potential familial connection.
Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson, whose enduring friendship has been a subject of public fascination, are promoting their new show "Brothers" by sharing a series of unconventional anecdotes. The actors have revealed instances of Harrelson's spontaneous behavior, including unexpected late-night visits and inviting strangers on family vacations, and have even touched upon the surprising possibility that they might be biological brothers.
During a joint appearance on "Glass Half Full," McConaughey described Harrelson's tendency to "just show up" without prior contact. He recounted an incident where Harrelson entered his home in Los Angeles at 2 a.m. and climbed into bed with McConaughey and his wife, Camila Alves, after reportedly scaling a fence and entering through a window. Harrelson, on the podcast, humorously responded that he hoped McConaughey did not have a gun, but found it a "nice" way to wake up a friend.
The pair also recalled differing memories of their first meeting. McConaughey admitted he doesn't precisely remember their initial encounter, suggesting it might have been influenced by early drinking. Harrelson, however, recollected inviting McConaughey for a shot of alcohol, which McConaughey initially declined due to work commitments. This discrepancy, McConaughey noted, contributed to his hazy recollection of that day.
McConaughey also shared an anecdote about Harrelson's adventurous spirit, recounting a time he witnessed Harrelson perform a handstand near the edge of the Grand Canyon. Despite Harrelson's attempts to downplay the proximity, McConaughey described it as a potentially epic, though unphotographed, feat.
Further illustrating Harrelson's unconventional approach to social interactions, McConaughey told Conan O'Brien on his podcast, "Conan O'Brien Needs A Friend," about a trip to Greece. Harrelson met a couple at baggage claim and invited them to stay with McConaughey's family in the rented house for a week, much to McConaughey's surprise.
McConaughey also elaborated on Harrelson's habit of appearing unannounced at his home, sometimes for extended stays of up to three months. He described this as a "beautiful trait" where Harrelson makes himself at home, occasionally leading to McConaughey needing to ask for space, though his children often protest his departure.
The most striking revelation came from the premise of their new show, "Brothers," which fictionalizes their potential familial connection. McConaughey shared on a podcast that during a family trip to Greece, his mother revealed she knew Harrelson's father. Given that McConaughey's parents were divorced before his birth, this has led to speculation and a potential for them to be related. Harrelson has expressed willingness to undergo DNA testing to confirm, while McConaughey has expressed a reluctance, feeling it might mean "losing a father."
