Matthew Judon Joins 49ers Practice Squad Amid Defensive Injuries

Four-time Pro Bowl defensive lineman Matthew Judon has signed with the San Francisco 49ers, joining the team's practice squad on Monday. Judon, 34, brings a decade of NFL experience and a decorated career, including 423 tackles, 72 sacks, and nine forced fumbles.

Judon stated that the slew of injuries impacting the 49ers' defensive line was the driving factor behind his decision. "With all of the injuries piling up over there, I think I can just come in help until some of them guys get back," Judon said, according to a video posted on his Instagram account. He also noted his existing relationship with 49ers defensive coordinator Raheem Morris, who previously coached him with the Atlanta Falcons.

The 49ers have been particularly hard-hit by injuries on their defensive front. Star edge rusher Nick Bosa is expected to miss several weeks with a calf injury. Other notable absences include defensive tackle James Thompson Jr. and 2025 first-round pick Mykel Williams, who is nearing a return from a torn ACL sustained last season. These injuries have created a need for experienced depth as the team navigates its current schedule.

While Judon's prime may be behind him, his veteran presence could provide crucial stability to the 49ers' defensive line as they await the return of their injured players. The team currently boasts an undefeated record, and Judon's addition aims to help maintain that performance level.
