College football's return brought an emotional moment for USC legend Matt Leinart when his son, Cole, delivered a heartfelt message during Fox's "Big Noon Kickoff." Cole Leinart is set to play in his first college football game Monday night against Florida State in Tallahassee.
"Obviously, Pops, thank you for everything. I wouldn’t be here without you," Cole said, addressing his father during the broadcast. "These past couple of years, obviously, it’s been a long journey to be here. I’m super grateful for everything you’ve done for me, to support and love. I couldn’t ask for a better dad. I’m so grateful to call you my dad."
Matt Leinart, who was visibly emotional, called it a "proud dad moment" and admitted he was not expecting the surprise appearance from his son. The moment marks a full-circle event for the Leinart family as Cole prepares to step onto the college football field, following in his father's decorated footsteps.
Matt Leinart, a three-year starter for the Trojans from 2003-2005, led USC to three national championship games, winning two. He earned the Heisman Trophy in 2004, throwing for 3,322 yards and 33 touchdowns.
Cole Leinart's path to college football involved transferring schools twice, including to his father's alma mater, Mater Dei. He most recently played for Redondo Union High School, leading them to the CIF Division 5 finale in the previous year. He signed with SMU in January and is currently listed as a backup quarterback for the Mustangs. Despite his current role, Cole expressed readiness and even predicted SMU's starting quarterback, Kevin Jennings, to be a Heisman Trophy winner this year.
