Actor Matt Damon shared an anecdote about his urgent travel plans to return to the United States in time to watch the Boston Red Sox begin their historic 2004 World Series victory.
Damon recounted on the podcast "Good Hang" that he was filming "Syriana" in Dubai at the time and was following the American League Championship Series (ALCS) against the New York Yankees from Geneva, Switzerland. After the Red Sox secured their ALCS win, Damon received clearance from producer George Clooney to alter the shooting schedule, allowing him to fly home.
He landed at New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport during the early innings of Game 1 of the World Series and hurried to his apartment. Damon stated he arrived in time to watch the rest of the game and that the Red Sox won that night.
Believing he had found a good luck charm, Damon opted to watch all subsequent games from his apartment alone to avoid jinxing the team. The championship was particularly meaningful, he noted, as it was the Red Sox's first World Series title since 1918.
The Red Sox went on to sweep the St. Louis Cardinals 4-0 in the 2004 World Series, ending a long championship drought for the franchise and its fans.
