Matt Brown, a star of the reality television series “Alaskan Bush People,” died by suicide, according to a death certificate obtained by TMZ. The 43-year-old reality star's body was discovered in the Okanogan River in Washington on May 30.
An eyewitness alerted emergency services after seeing Brown wading in the river. The Okanogan County Sheriff’s Office reported that the 911 caller observed a man, later identified as Brown, facedown in the water and drifting with the current after hearing a sound. Bear Brown, Matt Brown's younger brother, confirmed his brother's death via suicide in a TikTok video, stating that the body found in the river had been positively identified as Matt.
Bear Brown also claimed that Matt had been struggling with alcohol and drug addiction for an extended period and had distanced himself from the family. According to a report obtained by Page Six, the Okanogan County Coroner later ruled Brown's death a suicide resulting from a penetrating gunshot wound to the head. The report also indicated that methamphetamine was present in his system at the time of his death.
The production team for “Alaskan Bush People” issued a statement on June 2, mourning Brown's passing. "We’re saddened to hear of Matt Brown’s passing," the statement read. "He shared so much of his life with viewers over the years and was an important part of Alaskan Bush People. Our thoughts are with his family, friends, and those who were touched by his story."
In the weeks preceding his death, Brown had ended his relationship with his girlfriend, Jamie. Insiders told TMZ that Jamie had urged Brown to seek professional help for his personal struggles, believing she could not be his sole source of support. Those close to the couple described Jamie as a positive influence who remained committed to Brown's well-being, even after their breakup.
