Matisse Thybulle Praises Collin Sexton's Immediate Defensive Impact for Lakers

For Matisse Thybulle, the current Los Angeles Lakers team offers a unique advantage: a plethora of defensively minded players. This characteristic, he noted, creates a synergistic effect, where hustle plays by one player energize the entire team and generate momentum.

Thybulle pointed to the Lakers' recent win against the Clippers at Crypto.com Arena as a prime example of this dynamic. The veteran wing credited Collin Sexton, who made his Lakers debut during the game, with injecting a vital jolt of energy into the team.

"I felt like it immediately," Thybulle said of Sexton's impact. "He just invigorated the game with more energy."

Sexton entered the game for Austin Reaves with 3:52 remaining in the first quarter. Within eleven seconds, Sexton stripped Clippers guard Darius Garland during a drive, leading to a steal for the Lakers that Luka Doncic secured on the floor.

"He's a pest," Reaves commented on Sexton's play. "He feeds off the energy, he loves doing the little things and plays the game the right way. He'll have a big impact on what we're trying to do."

Sexton's defensive intensity carried into the second quarter. Lakers coach JJ Redick acknowledged Sexton's "intense way about him that I think will be really good for our group and guys will feed off that."

With the Lakers trailing 44-38 early in the second quarter, Sexton's pressure on Clippers guard Kris Dunn forced the Clippers to use a significant portion of their shot clock. Dunn's subsequent pass to rookie guard Keaton Wagler was errant, leading to another steal for the Lakers, this time by Reaves.

Although Sexton was not credited with a steal on the play, his defensive pressure initiated the turnover. In his 16 minutes of play, Sexton contributed five points, two assists, and three steals.

Thybulle further elaborated on the contagious nature of defensive effort. "Ziaire and I talk about it a lot: That's what we try to do for them," he said. "Even as people who try to do that, to see someone else doing it, it gives us even more energy. It's just one of those things that when everyone else is doing it, you don't want to be the guy to not be. It's almost like when you're working out in practice and like everyone's making shots in a row, you don't want to be the one to miss it and mess it up. Defensively, you can have a similar thing, which is effort and energy."

Sexton's performance provided an abundance of both effort and energy in the Lakers' second win of the season.
