Matador Endures Brutal Goring Amidst Growing Questions About Career

Matador Andres Roca Rey, a prominent figure in bullfighting often compared to soccer star Lionel Messi, has faced a series of dangerous encounters in the ring, raising concerns about his safety and career longevity.

Last week, Roca Rey was violently tossed by a bull in Arles, France, just minutes after entering the arena. The animal's horns lifted him several feet into the air, and he was subsequently rammed and thrown to the ground, appearing motionless and bloody to horrified spectators. Despite the severity of the incident, Roca Rey managed to get back on his feet and continue the fight.

This latest goring is one of many for the 29-year-old Peruvian, whose decade-long career has been marked by numerous injuries. He has reportedly been gored in the backside, trampled, lanced, and tossed around numerous times. These repeated accidents have led some observers to give him the unfortunate nickname of the 'world's worst matador,' despite his status as one of the sport's biggest stars.

Roca Rey has previously expressed a commitment to taking risks, comparing his relationship with bullfighting to a romantic one where total commitment, while potentially leading to greater reward, also increases the risk of harm. However, the accumulation of severe injuries has led fans to question his continued involvement.

In April of this year, Roca Rey suffered a 'very serious' goring in Seville, Spain, where he sustained a deep gash in his right thigh after being impaled and lifted by a bull. The incident resulted in a 35cm-long wound and significant muscle damage, though major blood vessels were not affected.

In October 2024, he was impaled through the backside by a bull's horn at Madrid's Las Ventas bullring, resulting in a somersault before hitting the sand. He sustained an injury to his gluteus, requiring surgery.

Another harrowing incident occurred in July 2023 during the Santiago Fair in Santander, Spain, where Roca Rey suffered a double goring. A bull dragged him violently against the ring's wooden barriers, causing injuries to his face, neck, thigh, and knee.

Earlier in his career, Roca Rey also experienced a cluster of injuries in 2016. In April of that year, he was gored in the upper thigh in Seville. In July, during the San Fermin festival, he was gored in the leg. Weeks later, he was knocked unconscious in Malaga after being struck in the head. A fortnight after that, he was caught, flipped, and thrown violently to the ground in Palencia, losing consciousness upon impact.

In one of his earliest career incidents, Roca Rey had two teeth knocked out after a direct horn blow to the mouth.

Roca Rey, who comes from a bullfighting family in Peru and moved to Spain as a child, is considered one of bullfighting's biggest stars. However, the popularity of bullfighting has seen a decline in Spain in recent years, a stark contrast to its past where matadors were once revered figures akin to Hollywood actors.
