Policy researcher Emily Medhurst gained attention on a recent episode of the BBC quiz show Mastermind for her "niche specialism ever": the fabrics used on Transport for London (TfL) seating, known as moquettes. To complement her chosen topic, Medhurst revealed she knitted a vest inspired by these distinctive materials.

Medhurst's appearance on the show went viral, with viewers praising her unique subject choice. She explained that creating a moquette-inspired garment was her "number one priority" upon learning she would be a contestant. Her interest in moquettes stems from a lifelong appreciation for textiles and design, further sparked by an open day at TfL's Acton depot.

"I went to an open day at the Acton Depot a few years ago, and they had a stand about moquette, and I was like 'wow this is the perfect marriage of my two interests,' so I just got a bit more interested in it," Medhurst stated. She added that her interest developed into a deeper appreciation for the "unique design" found across the London Underground network, from seats to posters.

The vest Medhurst wore was inspired by moquettes found on London Overground lines. She told BBC Radio 4's Today Show that her focus on knitting the vest "took precedence over the revision a bit."

Fans reacted enthusiastically to her appearance, with social media comments highlighting the distinctiveness of her subject and her handmade attire. Even TfL acknowledged her performance, calling it the "most iconic specialist subject ever."

During her specialist round, Medhurst answered eight questions on moquettes correctly. Despite her memorable performance, she ultimately finished the competition in third place. The episode was won by customer service advisor Donald Campbell, whose specialist subject was the films of Paul Newman.

In related news, the BBC has announced plans to axe the celebrity version of Mastermind as part of broader cost-cutting measures, alongside other shows like "Live At The Apollo" and "Blankety Blank," due to declining viewership figures and funding challenges.
