MasterChef winner Thomasina Miers has revealed she has undergone a mastectomy following a breast cancer diagnosis. Miers, who co-founded the popular Mexican restaurant chain Wahaca, shared her experience to encourage women to seek prompt medical advice for any lumps they discover.
Miers, 50, explained that what she initially thought was a cyst turned out to be two lumps that were "bad asses." She stressed the importance of "always check a lump even if you think it’s a cyst and do it promptly."
"This scare, and what it puts in my path, may help me be braver at taking leaps into the unknown and making some scary decisions," Miers stated. "This is a very good thing. We only get one life. So today I am feeling enormously grateful. For breast cancer care has moved on so much in the last ten years. I’m praying for no chemo."
Miers believes her diet will aid in her recovery, stating, "Food is medicine." This is not the first significant health challenge Miers has faced; she has previously battled an eating disorder for a decade and was prescribed bipolar medication throughout her twenties. She also manages ADHD and has addressed low self-esteem.
"Age helps. Age is wisdom," Miers reflected. "Women particularly benefit from the passing of time by absorbing small truths. We are actual experts in our fields by now, we are good at what we do."
In separate news, author Salman Rushdie has postponed upcoming appearances in Melbourne and Sydney due to the need for "urgent eye surgery." Rushdie, 79, who was attacked in 2022, stated that his surgeon advised against long-distance travel during his recovery.
