A superyacht valued at over $350 million, recognized as one of the world's largest, has drawn significant attention after being observed navigating the waters off Hawaii. Videos and images shared on social media this week documented the immense vessel in various locations, including off Waikiki and near Maili.
The yacht's distinctive appearance led to public speculation about its owner and potential military connections. "At first, I thought it was a military vehicle," one observer told Hawaii News Now. "I’d be curious to see what they’re doing here."
Locals on Molokai also reported seeing the yacht. The luxury vessel is owned by Japanese billionaire entrepreneur and art collector Yusaku Maezawa, founder of the online fashion retailer Zozotown. The yacht's name, Nausicaä, is inspired by the Studio Ghibli anime "Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind" and has mythological roots meaning "burner of ships" or "she who shines among the ships."
The Nausicaä is equipped to accommodate 18 guests in nine cabins and is serviced by a crew of over 36. Amenities include a sushi bar, a two-level art gallery, a helipad, a swimming pool, and a table tennis area. The yacht's design is credited to Marc Newson, and it was constructed by the German shipyard Lürssen. Maezawa reportedly keeps a revolving art gallery aboard, featuring works by artists such as Andy Warhol and Jeff Koons.
The yacht is capable of cruising at approximately 14 knots, with a maximum speed exceeding 20 knots. It also features an environmentally conscious mode, able to operate silently on battery power by shutting down its generators when anchored, utilizing a 2-megawatt battery bank for onboard systems.
Maezawa's ventures extend beyond yachting; he was the first private passenger to travel to the International Space Station and is slated for a future trip around the moon aboard SpaceX's Starship.
