Massive Sinkhole Threatens Nicolas Cage's Malibu Mansion
A growing sinkhole has swallowed the access road to a celebrity enclave, forcing evacuations and leaving Nicolas Cage's $10.5 million home on the edge.
A massive sinkhole continues to expand near Nicolas Cage's Malibu mansion, threatening the property and forcing the evacuation of dozens of homes.
The sinkhole, which first opened on September 8, measures between 25 to 30 feet deep and 30 by 60 feet wide. It has swallowed the only access road to the Sea Level Drive community, where Cage's $10.5 million beachfront property is located.
On September 17, aerial photos revealed the extent of the damage, showing a large crater with shattered concrete and earth, surrounded by heavy equipment. Crews have been working from a boom lift in an attempt to mitigate further erosion.
The sinkhole's expansion prompted local officials to declare a state of emergency. Seven homes were red-tagged due to structural danger, and an additional 24 were evacuated because emergency vehicles could not safely reach them.
The collapse also caused a gas leak, leading to the shutoff of gas and water lines to the affected properties. Notably, emergency crews had responded to a gas main break at Cage's property just two days prior to the main sinkhole event.
Geologists and engineers are currently working to stabilize the area, protect foundations, and establish temporary coastal erosion defenses. The ultimate goal is to fill the crater and rebuild the damaged road.
Nicolas Cage purchased the Malibu property for $10.5 million in 2024. The sinkhole is attributed to severe coastal erosion, exacerbated by powerful surf, high tides, and waves associated with Hurricane Marie.
