Massive Sinkhole Swallows Van After Water Main Break in Los Angeles

A significant water main break in the Los Feliz neighborhood of Los Angeles caused a massive sinkhole to open up Wednesday afternoon, swallowing an entire Spectrum service van.

The incident occurred at the intersection of Franklin and Normandie avenues, where the ruptured main flooded the street and washed away the asphalt, creating the cavity that trapped the vehicle. Water from the break rushed down Normandie Avenue.

Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) crews and firefighters responded to the scene. They worked to shut off the main water line and closed off surrounding roads for several blocks in each direction. No injuries have been reported, and nearby homes were assessed and appeared to be safe.

The sinkhole and flooding caused considerable disruption in the affluent neighborhood. Utility workers were on-site addressing the break and assessing the damage to the infrastructure.
