Massive Fire Engulfs Nottingham City Centre Building, Evacuations Underway
Twelve fire engines battled the blaze overnight on Market Street, causing significant traffic disruption and tram service shutdowns.
A large fire broke out in a building in Nottingham city centre late Tuesday night, prompting the evacuation of residents and a significant emergency response.
Fire crews were dispatched to Market Street shortly after 10 p.m., with 12 fire engines and at least 48 firefighters attending the scene. They worked through the night to contain the inferno, cordoning off the area and deploying water hoses.
Striking images from the scene show flames illuminating the night sky with a bright orange glow as thick grey smoke rises. The cause of the fire remains unknown at this time.
As of Wednesday morning, a reduced fire service presence remained at the scene. The NET Nottingham Tram service has been partially suspended, operating in neither direction between Theatre Royal and Market Square. Several key roads, including Upper Parliament Street, Lower Parliament Street, King Street, and Queen Street, were closed or had lanes restricted, leading to expected heavy traffic disruption throughout the morning.
Authorities advised residents in the vicinity to keep their windows and doors shut as a precaution. There have been no reported injuries thus far. A fire investigation is scheduled to commence later today to determine the origin of the blaze.
