Massive Fire Engulfs Industrial Estate in West Berkshire, Disrupts Train Services

Emergency services, including multiple fire engines, responded to the incident at the waste management center. Videos circulating from the scene depicted intense flames and large plumes of smoke rising into the sky.
Residents in the area reported hearing noises described as 'explosions' and 'popping,' with some suggesting the possibility of lithium batteries being involved, a cause cited in similar fires at waste centers over the summer. The fumes from the fire were described as strong and unpleasant, leading local authorities to advise residents to close windows and remain indoors.
The fire led to the establishment of a 150-meter exclusion zone by Network Rail around the affected area. This measure resulted in the suspension of all train services between Reading and Bedwyn. While the line has since reopened, a very limited service is expected to operate, with rail replacement services available for affected passengers. Services are anticipated to return to normal by the morning of September 29.
The Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service confirmed they were responding to the incident on Colthrop Lane and would provide further updates. Local MP Lee Dillon also addressed the situation, urging constituents to follow safety advice and promising to share updates as they become available.
Witnesses reported hearing the 'bangs' from as far as two miles away, with one report placing the sound at Newbury Racecourse, two and a half miles from the site.
