Massive Fire Engulfs Industrial Estate, Disrupting Train Services
Explosions heard and a strong smell reported as emergency services battle a large blaze at Colthrop Business Park, leading to train cancellations and resident advisories.
A significant fire broke out at Colthrop Business Park in West Berkshire on Monday evening, prompting the suspension of all train services in the vicinity due to a safety exclusion zone. Emergency services were dispatched to the industrial estate near Thatcham shortly after 7:30 p.m.
Dramatic footage circulating online appeared to show intense flames within a waste management center, with thick plumes of smoke rising into the sky. Local residents reported hearing 'popping' and 'explosions,' with some speculating that lithium batteries could be the cause, referencing similar incidents at waste sites over the summer. The smell from the fire was described as 'strong' and 'horrible.'
The fire led to the closure of Thatcham train station. Network Rail established a 150-meter exclusion zone around the incident, causing the suspension of all train services between Reading and Bedwyn. While the line has since reopened, only a limited service is operating, with passengers advised to check travel information. A rail replacement service has been put in place, and normal service is expected by Tuesday morning.
The Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service confirmed they were responding to a large number of calls and had crews on site. Local MP Lee Dillon addressed the incident, confirming the fire's location at the waste management center and urging residents to remain indoors with windows and doors closed. He stated that updates would be provided as the situation developed.
