Massive 900-Pound Ocean Sunfish Found Dead on Cape Cod Beach
The large fish, a common sight during seasonal migrations, likely became trapped in shallow waters.
A nearly 900-pound ocean sunfish was found dead on a Cape Cod beach this week, a recurring tragedy for the species as it migrates toward warmer southern waters during the fall.
The adult female fish washed ashore at the mouth of the Herring River in Wellfleet, Massachusetts. Ocean sunfish, known for their immense size and distinctive appearance, migrate annually along the Atlantic coast. This species, which can weigh up to 4,400 pounds, is classified as 'Vulnerable' on the IUCN Red List.
Volunteers from the New England Coastal Wildlife Alliance (NECWA), a nonprofit organization, responded to the scene. They noted that such strandings are not uncommon during this time of year. The hook-like shape of Cape Cod's coastline and the region's tidal patterns can funnel these open-ocean fish into the shallow waters of Cape Cod Bay, particularly Wellfleet Harbor.
For ocean sunfish accustomed to deeper environments, these shallow areas can become a deadly trap, especially as tides recede. The fish found this week measured roughly 900 pounds, with its ovary alone weighing 13.2 pounds, according to researchers.
NECWA collected data, tissue samples, and photographs from the deceased sunfish. These materials will be shared with scientists globally to contribute to the understanding of ocean sunfish biology and ecology. Despite their vulnerable status, ocean sunfish are prolific breeders, with females capable of producing up to 300 million eggs, one of the highest reproductive outputs among vertebrates.
