Rep. Thomas Massie, R-Ky., introduced articles of impeachment against Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth on Tuesday, accusing him of violating the War Powers Resolution of 1973 by waging war in Iran without congressional approval. Massie made the announcement on the House floor, stating that Hegseth has "executed unlawful orders in contravention of Section 2(c) of the War Powers Resolution of 1973."
Massie declared that "Secretary of Defense Peter Hegseth, by such conduct, has demonstrated that he will remain a threat to the Constitution if allowed to remain in office, and has acted in a manner grossly incompatible with his duties and the rule of law."
The resolution aims to compel a House vote on the impeachment articles this week. While Republican leadership could move to table the resolution, Massie, who was recently ousted by a Trump-backed opponent, is reigniting the anti-war debate.
Earlier this year, both the House and Senate passed resolutions urging President Trump to end the Iran conflict. The administration argued that the war concluded after an initial phase, effectively resetting the 90-day clock mandated by the War Powers Resolution. President Trump has been pursuing diplomatic efforts to negotiate a deal with Iran aimed at halting its nuclear program and reopening the Strait of Hormuz.
The Pentagon had not immediately responded to a request for comment regarding the impeachment articles.
Massie, known for his libertarian views and fiscal conservatism, has a history of diverging from White House policy positions.
