Massachusetts Sports Betting Market Offers Seven Online Apps, Retail Locations
Legal sports wagering is available to adults 21 and older within the state, with options for both online and in-person betting.
Massachusetts has established a legal sports betting market, featuring seven licensed online sportsbook apps and three retail locations. The state's journey to legal wagering began with legislative approval on August 1, 2022, followed by Governor Charlie Baker signing House Bill 5164 into law on August 10, 2022. Retail sportsbooks opened their doors on January 31, 2023, with online operators launching on March 10, 2023.
Residents and visitors aged 21 and over who are physically present within Massachusetts can place bets. While online platforms offer convenience, three retail venues provide an in-person betting experience: Encore Boston Harbor in Everett, MGM Springfield in Springfield, and Plainridge Park Casino in Plainville.
For online bettors, popular platforms include FanDuel Sportsbook, noted for its speed, innovation, and fast withdrawals; BetMGM, which offers an "Edit My Bet" feature and a rewards program; and Fanatics Sportsbook, providing a rewards system called FanCash with low withdrawal minimums. TheScore Bet is also available, offering frequent odds boosts and parlay bonuses.
These sportsbooks often provide welcome offers to new users, which can include bet-and-get promotions, profit boosts, or deposit matches. To sign up, users typically download an app, provide personal information for verification and geolocation checks, deposit funds, and then claim any available offers before placing a wager.
Massachusetts is home to major professional sports teams, including the Boston Celtics (NBA), Boston Red Sox (MLB), Boston Bruins (NHL), and the New England Patriots (NFL), all of which are popular for betting. College sports are also available for wagering, but with specific restrictions. Bettors cannot wager on individual player props for college games, nor can they bet on in-state college teams unless they are participating in a postseason or multi-team tournament event.
Responsible gambling resources are available in Massachusetts, including the 1-800-GAMBLER helpline, the National Problem Gambling Helpline at 1-800-522-4700, and online resources such as PlayWell.org.
