Massachusetts Restaurant Owner Faces Charges After Alleged Confrontation with Teen Dine-and-Dashers
Nadim Kashouh is accused of assaulting two teenagers and brandishing a firearm following a dispute over an unpaid bill, claiming self-defense.
A Massachusetts restaurant owner is facing multiple charges after allegedly assaulting two teenagers and pulling a gun during a confrontation that followed a dine-and-dash incident at his establishment. Nadim Kashouh, 62, is accused of chasing down a 17-year-old girl and 18-year-old Javonnie Lee after they left Nadim’s Downtown Mediterranean Grill on Friday without paying a $92.40 bill.
According to police, Kashouh apprehended the teens at a nearby convenience store. The teenagers reportedly told authorities they attempted to pay their bill twice, but fled when their card was declined. Police stated that Kashouh then grabbed the girl's phone, demanding payment. He is accused of elbowing the girl and punching Lee in the face.
As a larger group gathered at the scene, Kashouh allegedly brandished his firearm, which he claims was in self-defense. Springfield Police spokesperson Ryan Walsh confirmed that Kashouh’s firearm and his license to carry permit were seized. Kashouh has been charged with two counts of assault with a dangerous weapon, armed robbery with a firearm, and assault and battery. The two teenagers are expected to face criminal complaints for defrauding a restaurant.
Kashouh, who immigrated to the United States from Lebanon in 1990, appeared in court earlier this week. A statement posted on the restaurant's Facebook page asserted Kashouh's innocence, stating he acted in self-defense and is eager to present the full facts. The post also expressed gratitude for the community's support during the legal proceedings, noting that Nadim's Downtown Mediterranean Grill recently celebrated over 25 years of service.
Some individuals have publicly supported Kashouh, with one former employee describing him as respectful, fair, calm, and hardworking, stating she never witnessed him lose his temper. She also highlighted his generosity and commitment to his community.
The Springfield Police Department and the restaurant have been contacted for further comment.
