Massachusetts lawmakers have proposed legislation that would establish a permanent commission tasked with identifying and recommending American Muslims for appointed positions within the state government. The bill, Senate Bill S.2134, aims to create an 11-member panel composed of individuals who practice Islam, to be appointed by Democratic Governor Maura Healey and other state officials. This commission would advise on issues impacting the Muslim community, including business, economy, and healthcare, and would actively recommend qualified candidates for government roles.

This initiative from Massachusetts comes as the Trump administration actively seeks to dismantle diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs nationwide. A White House spokesperson stated that President Trump was elected with a mandate to end divisive policies and restore merit and efficiency, asserting that DEI initiatives caused workforce inefficiencies and a restricted labor pool. The administration has terminated federal DEI contracts and eliminated related government programs, with proponents of the rollback arguing that such policies constitute reverse discrimination.

State Senator Jamie Eldridge, the bill's primary sponsor, stated that the proposed commission builds upon Massachusetts' legacy of leadership in equality and civil rights. He emphasized that American Muslims contribute significantly to communities as students, healthcare workers, educators, business owners, and civic leaders. Eldridge believes the commission will enable the state to better understand and address the challenges faced by this demographic, thereby strengthening inclusion and civic participation.

Muslims constitute an estimated 2% to 3% of Massachusetts' population, according to data from the Pew Research Center and the U.S. Census. The bill has advanced through initial committee markups and votes and is currently under consideration by the state’s Senate Ways and Means Committee. Governor Healey's office did not provide a comment regarding the legislation when contacted.
