Mass Shooting Near Florida A&M University Injures 12 During Homecoming
Violence erupted near Bragg Memorial Stadium, with victims including six juveniles as young as 11.
A mass shooting incident occurred near Florida A&M University's Bragg Memorial Stadium in Tallahassee on Saturday night, injuring at least 12 people amid homecoming celebrations. The victims included six juveniles, the youngest being 11 years old, and a grandmother of one of the victims who was injured while fleeing the scene.
Tallahassee Police Chief Lawrence Revell stated that 11 individuals sustained gunshot wounds, with three suffering serious injuries and one in critical condition. The incident unfolded shortly before 8 p.m. near the intersection of Perry and Manatee streets. Investigators believe a fight between individuals may have preceded the shooting. No arrests have been made, and authorities have not identified any suspects or determined the cause of the confrontation.
The violence occurred shortly after Florida A&M's homecoming football game, which saw large crowds celebrating in the surrounding streets. Videos circulating on social media depicted chaotic scenes, with officers seen carrying injured individuals and emergency responders treating victims on the ground.
Revell described the efforts of first responders, noting that officers had to physically carry some victims to transport because emergency vehicles could not reach them through the crowds. Witnesses described scenes of panic and fear as people scrambled to escape the gunfire.
In response to the incident, neighboring Florida State University issued a warning advising its students, faculty, and staff in Tallahassee to remain indoors as a precaution, emphasizing that there was no indication of FSU community involvement. By 9:45 p.m., the shooting scene was secured, and Florida A&M University issued a statement expressing condolences to those affected and encouraging people to avoid the area to allow law enforcement to conduct its investigation.
