Masked Robber Demands Cash with Knife in Late-Night Store Raid
A balaclava-clad individual brandished an eight-inch knife and threatened a cashier during a robbery at a convenience store in Tyne and Wear.
A convenience store in Tyne and Wear was the scene of a terrifying late-night robbery last Thursday, when a masked assailant entered the premises moments before closing time and demanded money from the till at knifepoint.
The incident occurred at the Go Local Extra store in Shiney Row. CCTV footage captured the moment a robber, wearing a balaclava, an Emporio Armani tracksuit, and orange gardening gloves, entered the shop. The individual placed a bread container in front of the door, preventing it from being locked.
The robber then approached the cashier, identified as Abi, and brandished an approximately eight-inch knife, demanding that all the money be placed in a bag. Abi, who had joined the store only a few months prior, initially resisted by pretending to open the till and hoping for the arrival of a customer.
In an attempt to deter the assailant, Abi tried to activate a button to lock the knifeman inside, but the electric door mechanism was obstructed by the bread box. The robber grew impatient, urging the cashier to hurry and hand over the money.
After more than a minute of the confrontation, Abi surrendered approximately £200 from the till. The robber then fled the scene with the cash.
Sin, the 23-year-old owner of the family-run store which opened in February, was alerted to the incident by a distressed call from Abi. He expressed his shock upon reviewing the CCTV footage, noting that this was the first time staff had been threatened with a weapon. Sin mentioned that he had emptied most of the cash from the till earlier that evening, which likely limited the amount stolen.
Northumbria Police confirmed they received a report of the robbery shortly before 11 p.m. on Thursday. A spokesperson stated that the suspect threatened a staff member with a bladed article, took a quantity of cash, and left before officers arrived. The victim was not physically injured but was left shaken.
Following the incident, the local community showed significant support for the store and its staff. Many residents visited the shop over the weekend to check on the well-being of Abi and other employees, and some provided potential clues regarding the robber's identity, which are being reviewed by the police.
