Two individuals wearing masks approached the Long Island home previously occupied by convicted serial killer Rex Heuermann, an incident captured on doorbell camera footage. The pair rang the doorbell and then departed, according to video and statements obtained by Newsday.
Heuermann's ex-wife, Asa Ellerup, and their two children were inside the residence at the time of the encounter. The family's attorney, Robert Macedonio, stated that Ellerup regularly faces harassment, including people driving by and making comments. The family filed a police report following the incident, initially believing it to be an attempted break-in, particularly as their dog began barking. However, the video appears to show the dog barking after the individuals had already left the porch.
Nassau County police responded to the scene and conducted a neighborhood search for the individuals but were unable to locate them. Authorities determined that the incident did not meet the threshold for attempted breaking and entering charges.
Heuermann, 62, was sentenced to multiple consecutive life sentences without parole after admitting to strangling eight women between 1993 and 2010. The Gilgo Beach murders, which occurred over a period of 17 years, involved victims whose remains were discovered along Ocean Parkway on Long Island. The investigation into these murders led to Heuermann's arrest in July 2023.
