Actress Mary Louise Weller, best known for her role as Mandy Pepperidge in the 1978 comedy "Animal House," has died at the age of 79.
Mary Louise Weller, an actress recognized for her portrayal of Mandy Pepperidge in the 1978 film "National Lampoon's Animal House," died on Thursday, October 1. She was 79 years old. Her passing occurred after a brief illness, one day before what would have been her 80th birthday, according to her partner Michael Roy Curtis and confirmed by The Hollywood Reporter.
Close friend David Marks also announced her death in a tribute on Facebook, remembering her as "beautiful Mary, friend, actress, model, equestrian."
Weller was born on October 2, 1946, in New York and was raised in the Los Angeles area. Her career in entertainment began in modeling before she transitioned to acting. Her debut was in the 1972 political comedy "Hail!" The following year, she appeared in a minor role in the crime drama "Serpico." Throughout the 1970s, Weller made guest appearances on television shows such as "Kojak."
In 1978, the same year "Animal House" was released, Weller starred in the supernatural horror film "The Evil." Her role as sorority girl Mandy Pepperidge in "Animal House," directed by John Landis, became her most recognized performance. The film, set in the early 1960s, was a significant box office success, grossing approximately $141.6 million on a $3 million budget. The ensemble cast included John Belushi, Tim Matheson, Karen Allen, and Kevin Bacon.
In a 2012 interview, Weller recalled that her godfather, actor Danny Kaye, had warned her that "Animal House" would be the role she would always be known for. "I was the beautiful girl in trouble or the rich guy's daughter who owns a Porsche and won't give you the time of day," she reflected in a 1986 interview with the Los Angeles Times about her typical roles.
Following "Animal House," Weller continued to take on guest roles in television series including "Starsky And Hutch," "CHiPs," "Supertrain," and "Fantasy Island." She also starred in the 1979 film "The Bell Jar," an adaptation of Sylvia Plath's novel. In 1980, she worked with Ted Danson and Christopher Lee in the television film "Once Upon A Spy." Her later film credits include "Forced Vengeance" (1982) with Chuck Norris, and the films "Q" and "Blood Tide" in the same year. Her final acting credit was an appearance in an episode of "Quincy, M.E." in 1983.
