Marvel's 'VisionQuest' Premieres on Disney+ with Identity Crisis
Paul Bettany returns as the synthezoid Avenger in the final installment of the WandaVision trilogy, exploring themes of memory, creation, and self-discovery.
Marvel's latest miniseries, VisionQuest, has premiered on Disney+, centering on the synthezoid Avenger's complex journey of self-discovery. Starring Paul Bettany, the eight-episode series continues the narrative arc that began with WandaVision and followed by Agatha All Along, delving into Vision's struggle with his identity following a reboot.
A Search for Identity
The series finds Vision grappling with fragmented memories and an uncertain future. According to the official synopsis, he is hiding from those who wish to weaponize him, working a low-profile job in Edinburgh while seeking to understand who he is. His internal conflict is further complicated by his connection to his creator, the powerful AI villain Ultron, reprised by James Spader for the first time since Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015).
Showrunner Terry Matalas explained that the decision to bring Ultron back was driven by a desire to explore Vision's identity crisis. "I wanted that last scene in Avengers: Age of Ultron between the two of them to go on for another 127 minutes. Then, it dawned on me: ‘What if all of that was the series?’" Matalas told Disney.
Vision's quest for answers is also influenced by AI personalities within his programming, including F.R.I.D.A.Y. (Orla Brady), E.D.I.T.H. (Emily Hampshire), and J.A.R.V.I.S. (James D’Arcy). The narrative takes a turn when bounty hunter Paladin (Todd Stashwick) pursues a mysterious boy named Thomas Shepherd (Ruaridh Mollica), who may be a reincarnation of Vision's son.
