Martinez Explains Outburst on Manchester United Hierarchy
Lisandro Martinez attributed his public criticism of the club's management to anger and frustration following a poor result.
Manchester United defender Lisandro Martinez has stated that his recent critical remarks regarding the club's hierarchy were made out of "anger and frustration." The Argentina international had publicly expressed disappointment with the club's lack of squad investment over the summer, particularly after United's Champions League group stage defeat to Atletico Madrid.
Martinez conveyed that he expected greater investment in the team and more from the club's technical director, Jason Wilcox. However, he clarified his position in a social media post, stating, "After the match, I spoke out of anger and frustration at not getting the result we all wanted."
He emphasized his passionate approach to football and his desire to win, noting that disappointing results are particularly hard when representing a club with Manchester United's historical significance. "My words reflect how I feel and how much I want to see this club competing for the biggest honours," Martinez said, adding that high standards are integral to his view of football and the responsibility of wearing the club's jersey.
"When I talk about wanting more, I'm talking about the ambition we must all have as part of this club," he continued. "To keep growing, to become stronger and to have everything we need to compete at the highest level."
Manchester United has experienced a difficult start to the season, failing to win in their last five matches since a September victory against Sabah. The team has secured only two wins in nine games this season, placing them 13th in the Premier League standings with six points from six matches. Martinez's current contract with Manchester United is set to expire at the end of the season, with the club holding an option to extend it by an additional year.
Martinez also placed responsibility on the players for their performance. "I know that, first and foremost, it's us, the players, who have to deliver, and I put myself at the front of that responsibility," he stated. "We need to demand even more of ourselves and work together to take Manchester United back to the top."
Despite the recent criticisms and team struggles, Martinez expressed confidence in his teammates, the manager, and the club's staff. "I believe in my teammates, our manager and everyone working to help this club move forward," he said, expressing conviction that the path forward involves continued collaboration, ambition, and commitment. His primary objective, he added, remains consistent: to win, compete at the highest level, and give his all for the club.
Mamaester United is scheduled to play Leeds United next in the Premier League on Sunday, October 18.
