Martinez Criticizes Manchester United Hierarchy After Atletico Loss

Lisandro Martinez has openly criticized Manchester United's hierarchy and technical director Jason Wilcox in the wake of the team's 2-0 Champions League loss to Atletico Madrid. In a post-match interview, the Argentine defender did not hold back, suggesting a lack of investment in player quality compared to their opponents.

"Really poor. Really poor," Martinez stated, reflecting on the team's performance which saw them concede early in the match. He added that the situation mirrored the current state of the club and expressed expectations for more significant player acquisitions to bolster the squad. "I expect more (investment). 100 per cent. I expect more from our technical director (Jason Wilcox)," Martinez said. "As players we have to do more but it is also important when you make a strong squad to be ready for this kind of night."

Martinez recalled Manchester United's performance in the previous season, noting that while a foundation was built, the club needs to evolve. "Every season is different. You can't stay with what you did last season. The teams knows how you play, they know every detail, if you don't change next season is a big problem," he explained. He also alluded to looking beyond the coach and players, suggesting that "other areas" of the club need attention.

Despite his strong words towards the club's management, Martinez affirmed his belief in manager Michael Carrick, stating that the coach "does his best."

Former Manchester United player Wayne Rooney commented on Martinez's remarks on Amazon Prime, suggesting the defender may have gone too far. "I think he's gone a bit too far," Rooney said. He acknowledged that fans want to see players who care and that Martinez clearly does, but questioned the timing and tone of his criticism. Rooney agreed that the club needs to invest more in its squad but implied Martinez's comments could signal his own departure. "But it looks like it was a bit of an agenda," Rooney added.
