A viral video captured Timothy Allen Wegert, 33, attempting a spinning kick on a Virginia Beach police officer during the Fourth of July weekend. The incident occurred on July 5 around 2:20 a.m. The officer narrowly avoided the kick and subsequently tackled Wegert, who was shirtless and wearing striped pants. Three additional officers responded to assist in taking Wegert into custody.

Bill Peters, a family friend, identified Wegert as the former chief executive officer and master instructor of the UpLevel Martial Arts academy in Charlottesville. Peters confirmed Wegert's past achievements as a three-time world champion martial artist. The video of the incident, posted by Shore Drive Shuffle, had garnered over 167,000 views.

Wegert has been charged with felony assault on a law enforcement officer. Additional charges include misdemeanor simple assault, disorderly conduct, and two counts of obstruction of justice.

Peters stated that Wegert was reportedly fired as CEO in 2021 due to conduct outside the company, which allegedly involved several assaults. Court records indicate that Wegert was found guilty of a felony bomb threat in November 2023 and received a 10-year prison sentence, with eight years and six months suspended. He was also found guilty of misdemeanor stalking around the same time. Wegert was released from supervised probation on April 23 of this year.
