Martha Stewart Reveals Staggering Profits from Kmart Deal

Martha Stewart revealed the significant profits generated from her past business ventures, particularly her lucrative deal with Kmart, in a recent episode of the "Other People's Business" podcast.

Stewart told podcast host David Rogier that she once earned $65 million annually from Kmart royalties alone. "We were selling close to $2 billion worth of merchandise," she stated, describing the deal, which began in the 1980s, as "the first big money" moment of her career. She explained that the royalties funded the development of her magazine and other business operations.

"I would get a huge royalty on every sale of every product I designed," Stewart recalled. "They would pay for all the advertising. The original budget for the first year was $20 million for advertising." She noted that Kmart took a chance on the partnership, as they did not anticipate the scale of sales.

Stewart, who parted ways with Kmart in 2009, mentioned that her then-husband, Andrew Stewart, was instrumental in negotiating the deal. She also commented that achieving similar revenue levels today is more challenging due to lower royalty rates offered by companies.

Beyond the Kmart deal, Stewart discussed other profitable ventures. She mentioned receiving significant compensation for commercials, earning more than the $5 million speculated by Rogier. Her magazine publishing also proved highly successful, yielding substantial earnings, though she noted the exact amount is difficult to quantify. Her initial cookbook advance was $100,000, with subsequent book deals earning considerably more due to her increased value as an author.

Stewart also reflected on her earlier catering business, where she grossed over $1 million but described the work as physically demanding and all-consuming. She contrasted this with her current business model, where she often receives payment in goods, citing an instance where she received $40,000 worth of clothing for attending a fashion show.

Stewart also touched upon her legal troubles in the early 2000s, during which she stated she lost approximately $1 billion. Following a conviction in an insider trading scandal, she served five months in prison, followed by home confinement and supervised probation. "The lawyers took me to the cleaners," she remarked, adding, "I'm back. I'm pretty good."

Stewart, who was convicted in an insider trading scandal, served five months in prison, followed by five months of home confinement and two years of supervised probation. She noted that her television shows were primarily for popularizing her brand rather than direct profit generation.
