Martha Plimpton Says 'Goonies 2' Sequel Will 'Never' Happen

The much-discussed sequel to the 1985 film "The Goonies" is unlikely to materialize, according to Martha Plimpton, who starred as Stef Steinbrenner in the original movie.

"I hear something, and then nothing. And then every single person wants to know, and I hear the same answer. It’s nothing," Plimpton told Page Six in an exclusive interview. "I don't think we've really successfully been able to find an idea that is better than the Goonies that we all made in the ’80s."

The film, based on a story by Steven Spielberg, followed a group of children on a treasure hunt. Its ensemble cast included Sean Astin, Josh Brolin, Corey Feldman, and Ke Huy Quan.

While reports and comments from cast members and Spielberg himself have periodically suggested a sequel was in development, Plimpton's statement casts doubt on its current viability.

In 2020, during a virtual cast reunion hosted by Josh Gad, Spielberg mentioned that "a lot of conversations" about a follow-up film had occurred. He explained that the challenge lay in creating a concept that matched the quality of the original. "Every couple of years we come up with an idea, but then it doesn’t hold water," Spielberg said at the time.

In February 2025, Variety reported that a sequel was in the works with Spielberg attached as a producer. Ke Huy Quan, who played Data in the original, also expressed enthusiasm for a sequel in 2025, stating he "would love for it to happen." Corey Feldman echoed this sentiment, suggesting it was "hopeful" given that the cast remained healthy and available.

Further fueling speculation, writer Potsy Ponciroli reportedly told fans in August 2025 that he had submitted a "well-received" first draft of a script, indicating progress. However, there have been no further official updates.

Josh Brolin, who played Brand, shared his mixed feelings in August 2025 with Entertainment Tonight. While he expressed a desire for a sequel due to the positive experience of making the original and its lasting appeal, he also voiced apprehension about potentially tarnishing the film's legacy. "The movie is received so well, generation after generation. It’s just everything good about it," Brolin said, adding with a touch of humor, "The Goonies grew up, and then they came out with their walkers and then they fell off a cliff because they couldn’t see very well."
