Martha Plimpton recently reunited with Tommy Lee Jones, her on-screen father from the 1984 film "The River Rat," for the second season of Ethan Hawke's FX series "The Lowdown."
Plimpton, who was 14 when she starred alongside Jones in "The River Rat," shared her enthusiasm for working with the veteran actor again. "A lot of people think of [Tommy Lee] as a rough, gruff kind of guy, but I think he’s just a teddy bear," Plimpton told Page Six. She described her excitement about the reunion as "incredible."
Jones, 80, joined the second season of "The Lowdown" in a rare television role, portraying the estranged father of Hawke's character, Lee Raybon. Plimpton also joins the cast as Sheriff Vela Thorne, a character who frequently clashes with Raybon.
According to Plimpton, Jones initially "didn't quite recognize" her on set until Hawke called out her full name. This moment led to a significant reunion hug between the two actors.
"The Lowdown" centers on Lee Raybon, a citizen journalist in Oklahoma who uncovers corruption in Tulsa. Plimpton, known for her roles in "The Goonies" and "East of Eden," stated that she is not overly selective about her roles, emphasizing that the character's necessity to the story is her primary consideration, regardless of the role's size.
Plimpton and Hawke share a long-standing friendship, having both emerged in Hollywood during the 1980s and co-starred in Tom Stoppard's Broadway play trilogy, "The Coast of Utopia," in 2006. Plimpton remarked on the evolution of their careers and personal growth over the years.
"I think he’s mellowed into this really extraordinarily good person," Plimpton said of Hawke. "There’s something about when a person feels comfortable in themselves – in horse riding, we call it ‘finding your seat.'"
In addition to her role in "The Lowdown," Plimpton has recently been involved in other notable projects, including the Netflix series "East of Eden" and the Emmy-winning HBO series "Task," which is currently filming its second season. "Task" features a new storyline with actors such as Mahershala Ali and Edgar Ramirez.
"The Lowdown" airs Wednesdays at 9 p.m. on FX and streams on Hulu.
