“Marshals” Star Ash Santos Discusses Andrea’s Emotional Arc and a Potential Crossover
The actress delves into Andrea Cruz's trauma, her deepening friendship with Belle, and the impact of Cal's cancer on the team in Season 2.
Ash Santos, who portrays Andrea Cruz in "Marshals," is shedding light on the emotional depths of her character in Season 2, particularly following the harrowing events of the previous season. The latest episode, "Sky Falling," saw Andrea grappling with the lingering trauma from her past, including her father's murder and a previous kidnapping incident. Santos described this period as "heartbreaking" for her character.
Santos explained that Andrea is currently processing a significant amount of trauma from recent events, including the loss of Garrett and the drama surrounding Kayce and Tate. This emotional toll has led her to avoid her personal space, opting to sleep and shower at the Marshals' offices, a situation Santos found deeply saddening when revealed by showrunner Spencer Hudnut. "She doesn’t feel safe even sleeping there by herself, so she sleeps in the team room at the Marshals’ offices, and showers there, and nobody knows. It’s so sad," Santos shared.
The series, a spinoff from the popular "Yellowstone" universe, has resonated with audiences, exceeding initial expectations. Santos noted the show's appeal lies in its ability to blend action with relatable character development, making it suitable for family viewing. "We didn’t realize how hungry people were for this type of show set in this world," she said.
Andrea's friendship with Belle (Arielle Kebbel) is a crucial element in Season 2, offering mutual support in a male-dominated field. Santos described their bond as "sisterly," emphasizing Belle's protective nature towards Andrea. "Belle also ends up being the one who catches on to the way that Dre is feeling and what she’s struggling with, and she becomes defensive and protective over her in a really beautiful way," Santos commented.
The investigation into Andrea's father's murder is also a significant storyline. Santos revealed that information unearthed about her father's past, including a potential double life, will lead Andrea on a journey to New York seeking answers. This personal quest is deeply intertwined with her own identity and past trauma.
Santos, whose own father was an NYPD SVU detective, finds a profound connection to her character. "I think for me, being able to play this character gives me so much to work with. I just have so much material," she stated. The actress also hinted at a moment of deep vulnerability for Andrea this season, where she will finally allow herself to process her father's death, a scene she believes fans will appreciate.
The impact of Cal's cancer diagnosis on the team is another key development. Santos explained that Cal's health struggles will affect each team member differently. Andrea, while dealing with her own issues, is reluctant to take on more responsibility but finds an unexpected confidant in Kayce.
Fans have expressed a strong desire for a crossover episode between "Marshals" and "Yellowstone." Santos acknowledged the appeal, citing the iconic status of "Yellowstone" characters like Beth and Rip. "How iconic would that be?" she mused, expressing openness to the idea.
Looking ahead, Santos hopes young girls watching "Marshals" will see Andrea as a reflection of their own strength and capabilities. "I hope she just recognizes herself in that and almost thinks, ‘Oh, that’s how I am already. Great. I’m glad that women are like that now as well,'" Santos said.
She concluded by teasing that Season 2 is about Andrea "reconciling with her past and growing more into herself," promising a significant evolution for the character. New episodes of "Marshals" Season 2 air Sundays on CBS and stream on Paramount+.
