The second season of the acclaimed Yellowstone spin-off, Marshals, is set to deepen character arcs and introduce new dramatic elements, according to star Ash Santos. The upcoming season will see protagonist Andrea Cruz investigating her father's death, a journey that will take her to New York City and potentially bring her closer to Kayce Dutton.

Santos revealed that Cruz's investigation into her father's past will uncover secrets, suggesting he may have been leading a double life. "Someone comes up to her at a certain point and says something because they knew the precinct that her father worked in, and it unearths all of this information that she didn’t know before," Santos told Decider. "As she starts digging into her father’s murder, she finds that there was an entire situation she had no idea about."

This quest for answers will lead Cruz to New York, where she will not be alone. Kayce Dutton, played by Luke Grimes, will accompany her. "For the fans, I think it’ll be really cool for them to see Dre go back to New York," Santos said. "That’s right, folks. Kayce Dutton (Luke Grimes) is headed to Brooklyn!"

The New York trip is expected to be a pivotal moment for the characters, allowing Cruz to process unresolved grief. "She ends up having a moment of deep vulnerability where she finally allows herself to cry and process the death of her father," Santos teased. "We didn’t see her cry at his funeral, so we finally see her cry, and it’s in the arms of a certain person."

Santos also addressed the burgeoning connection between Andrea and Kayce, which fans have noted since Season 1. "It did surprise me when I first signed on to the project," she admitted. "I think that for Kayce, when they decided to kill Monica off like that, there had to be so much care with that storyline because they were the heart of Yellowstone."

Developments in the romantic lives of both characters are anticipated in Season 2. "There will be developments on both fronts, both for Kayce and Andrea. Two people come in and catch the other one’s eye," Santos confirmed. However, she also hinted at lingering tension between Andrea and Kayce, noting a scene where they observe each other with their respective partners.

New faces will join the cast, including Marque Richardson as Assistant U.S. Attorney Patrick Barnes, who is set to interact with Cruz. Additionally, Jefferson White will return as Jimmy Hurdstrom, a character Santos described as bringing a "bubbly energy" to the set.

The season will also revisit Kayce's past, with a scene featuring a young man bearing the Yellowstone ranch's signature Y brand on his chest. Santos clarified this will offer a new perspective on an existing character's backstory.

Santos expressed particular excitement for Season 2, Episode 15, which features her daughter, Lawson, in a significant role. Lawson portrayed a younger version of Andrea in flashback scenes, adding a personal touch for Santos. "It’s so sweet to me, because there are literally scenes where I’m holding a photo looking at myself, but it’s really my daughter," she said.

"I’m really excited for the audience to see Andrea reconcile with her past and grow more into herself. She really grows up in Season 2 in a beautiful way," Santos concluded. New episodes of Marshals Season 2 will premiere Sundays on CBS and stream on Paramount+.
