Adam Dehmlow, a contestant on the reality series "Married at First Sight," found himself the subject of online criticism for his unconventional method of eating a pricey ribeye steak. The incident occurred during his honeymoon in Cancun, where Dehmlow was seen picking up the entire steak and biting into it before feeding a piece to his new wife, Marissa Meyer, with his bare hands.
The clip, which circulated on social media, drew numerous comments from viewers who called his eating style a "culinary faux pas." Reactions ranged from "Seriously, use a fork and a steak knife, for goodness sake! Was he raised by wolves?" to labels like "caveman" and "Flintstone."
Dehmlow, a 31-year-old data analyst from Seattle, stated that he was not surprised the scene garnered attention, suggesting that other couples on the show were not generating as much content. "So the second anybody does something with a little flavor, people are going to grab it with both hands," he told The Post.
He also mentioned that his wife was not particularly shocked by his actions, explaining that he had a history of "doing something unhinged on a pretty consistent schedule by that point." Dehmlow also faced online scrutiny for wearing socks in a pool during a group date, which he defended by citing a need for grip in case of a "sudden athletic event."
Dehmlow dismissed speculation that he was acting for the cameras, asserting that he was simply being himself. He acknowledged that while he anticipated some attention, he was taken aback by the extent of the online criticism. "Most people have never had a camera on them that many hours a week, and then all of that gets cut down to a few minutes," he said. "You’re not really meeting a person, you’re meeting a version of them somebody else assembled."
Dehmlow joined "Married at First Sight," now airing its Season 20 finale, with the genuine intention of finding a wife, having dated with "actual intent" since college without success. His family had varied reactions to his decision to marry a stranger, with his aunt expressing shock and his parents showing no surprise.
Notably, Dehmlow and Meyer were among the few couples in the show's history to have met before their wedding day. They had a brief encounter at a bar a year or two prior, but never progressed to a date. Dehmlow explained that the show ultimately "closed a loop I’d left open."
