New York attorney Maud Maron has criticized Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez's characterization of recent progressive movements as "crazy," recounting her personal experience of losing her job in 2020 for advocating for meritocracy in New York City's public schools. Maron stated that the "excesses of the toxic hyper-leftism" damaged individuals and the fabric of American society.
Maron, who was an attorney with the Legal Aid Society and a member of her children's Community Education Council, opposed then-Mayor Bill de Blasio's proposal to eliminate the SHSAT, the admission test for New York City's specialized high schools. She argued that the claim the test was racist was specious. Following her public stance, a caucus within her former union, the Black Attorneys of Legal Aid (BALA), issued a statement asserting that a public defender could not oppose anti-racism and effectively represent Black and Brown people. BALA stated Maron "had no business having a career in public defense" and expressed shame that she worked at the Legal Aid Society, a message amplified by her employer through a retweet.
Maron stated that this public shaming led to her job loss and also impacted her City Council candidacy, as she was repeatedly questioned about her "racist" education positions. She also noted that the incident served to silence others within the Legal Aid Society, citing a former colleague who later wrote to her expressing shame for not speaking out due to fear of losing his job.
According to Maron, the "Woke 1" era, as she refers to it, saw individuals face professional repercussions for expressing views on various topics. She mentioned academics being fired for opinions on climate change, individuals losing jobs for suggesting COVID-19 originated in a lab or for citing natural immunity, and those who questioned the rise in youth transgender identification or land acknowledgments facing ostracism. Maron also noted instances where innocuous behaviors, such as mispronouncing words or misconstruing hand gestures, led to people being fired or rejected from educational institutions.
Maron observed that institutions once criticized for embracing "Woke 1" pieties, such as colleges abandoning the SAT, are now reinstating them due to their effectiveness. She also pointed to a decline in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) consulting work, lawsuits filed by detransitioners, and a perceived shift in professional athletes and sports associations acknowledging that sex cannot be changed.
Maron concluded by stating that Ocasio-Cortez's desire to dismiss the events of "Woke 1" as "crazy" would allow her to pursue political advancement without accountability for the harm caused. Maron advocates for remembering the truth about "Woke 1," assessing its damage, demanding accountability from its leaders, and building a society that does not easily concede to powerful pressures when expressing truthful but unpopular views.
