The Miami Marlins have made four young players with significant team control available in trade talks as the Major League Baseball trade deadline approaches, according to reports. The team is willing to listen to offers for middle infielder Otto Lopez, middle infielder Xavier Edwards, outfielder Heriberto Hernandez, and catcher/designated hitter Liam Hicks. All four players are 26 or 27 years old and have multiple years remaining on their contracts. Lopez and Edwards each have three additional years of team control, Hicks has four, and Hernandez has five. Marlins analysts suggest the team may believe building a sustained competitive roster is more feasible beyond the 2025 and 2024 seasons. The organization's roster and farm system have seen improvements over the past two years, making the potential departure of key players like Edwards or Lopez less detrimental. Lopez, who was selected to his first All-Star Game in July, currently leads the majors with a .328 batting average. Through 105 games played this season, he has recorded nine home runs and 138 hits, accumulating a 4.5 fWAR. Edwards has also demonstrated strong performance, posting a .775 OPS with six home runs and 17 stolen bases. He has hit .296/.362/.381 in 2026. The market for catchers is reportedly thin, which has generated interest in Hicks. He has caught approximately once per week this season and has hit 14 home runs with a .798 OPS. Hernandez has also drawn attention after hitting 15 home runs since his recall from Triple-A on May 27. Marlins analyst Craig Mish reported that Miami is seeking players who are not on expiring contracts in exchange for any of the four players now available. The Marlins plan to retain core players including Sandy Alcantara, Eury Pérez, Max Meyer, and Joe Mack.
