Mark Wood Reflects on Fiery Test Spells as Career Concludes
The fastest England bowler on record shares insights into his most impactful performances during his international cricket career.
As Mark Wood retires from international cricket, he has recounted some of his most memorable and fiery spells, offering a glimpse into the mindset and physical sensations behind his blistering pace. Wood, widely recognized as England's fastest bowler, often battled injuries but produced numerous thrilling performances throughout his career.
The Saint Lucia Breakthrough
Wood's career took a significant turn in 2019 during the third Test against the West Indies in Saint Lucia. After advice from West Indian legend Michael Holding to lengthen his run-up, Wood achieved a career-defining spell, taking 5-41 in the first innings. "That was the fastest," Wood recalled. "I could be biased because I thought it was a breakthrough moment in my career but when I was watching the ball carry off the nicks, they felt a long way in the slips."
He described a feeling of weightlessness and effortless momentum, stating, "You feel a surge through your body and then a whip out of your fingers." This change in his bowling approach marked a distinct shift, as Wood noted, "I essentially had two different careers – the first one in and out of the team with good moments but struggling with ankle injuries and form. As soon as I went off my longer run I had much more momentum, flow and freedom and the ability to bowl consistently quicker for longer."
Jubilant in Johannesburg
Wood's best match figures of 9-100 came in the fourth Test against South Africa in Johannesburg in 2020. On a fast and bouncy pitch, Wood averaged 89.1mph, contributing to England's 191-run victory. He recounted facing South African bowler Anrich Nortje and a moment of fear followed by a resolve to bowl fast. A particular highlight was dismissing Rassie van der Dussen for 98. "We double-bluffed him. That was a great wicket because he was giving us a bit of verbals back," Wood said, referencing an on-field exchange.
He also mentioned the desire from his teammates to get one over on the opposition. "A few of the lads were desperate for me to stick one up him. We set up this bouncer plan, I pitched it up and he hit it straight to cover."
Earning Respect in Hobart
During the 2021-22 Ashes series defeat, Wood achieved his best innings figures of 6-37 in the final Test in Hobart. Despite the series loss, Wood expressed pride in his performance and the support he received from coaches. "I played four out of the five Tests and was proud of that. I was so tired at the end of that spell but came out with my best figures of the tour."
He noted the respect he earned from the Australian public and players. "Even on the boundary line the Australia fans were saying 'Woody, we want to see you on'." Wood recalled a moment in the lift with then-Australian coach Justin Langer, who reportedly said, "respect." Wood added, "That was a really nice moment. We always want respect from our people but to have it from the Australians was nice."
Headingley Heroics
Perhaps Wood's most significant spell came in the third Ashes Test at Headingley in 2023. With Australia leading the series 2-0, Wood delivered an electrifying 5-34 in the first innings, averaging 90.4mph on day one. This performance is widely seen as a turning point that helped England fight back in the series. He described his readiness for that spell, highlighting the physical intensity. "The day before I was bowling to a mitt and the strength coach had to swap because it was hurting his hand so much."
Wood particularly remembered the wicket of Australian opener Usman Khawaja, stating, "I can still hear the commentary and feel the ball." He noted the emotional significance, as his parents were present to witness his first five-wicket haul in an Ashes Test. "I spent a lot of my career in the bouncer role. I thought at times I was better than that and it hurt my stats. That day I got to pitch it up and it was the swing that did it."
