Mark Walter, the billionaire owner of the Los Angeles Dodgers and Lakers, is currently the subject of a federal investigation into alleged fraud within his private-credit deals. The probe is examining whether Guggenheim Partners, the financial services firm led by Walter, engaged in fraudulent practices, reportedly stemming from concerns raised by an employee regarding suspicious revenue bookings.

Amidst these financial investigations, Walter's health has also become a significant concern. According to The Wall Street Journal, the 66-year-old suffered a stroke during the Los Angeles Dodgers' 2024 World Series championship run. He was notably absent from the team's post-victory celebrations following their win at the Rogers Centre in Toronto, though he was present for their 2025 World Series win. The medical emergency occurred during the 2024 championship season, a fact that has only recently come to light.

Sources involved with Walter's business empire indicated that the recovery from the stroke was challenging, with Walter struggling to speak clearly for several months. Some executives and investors have also expressed concerns that his cognitive sharpness may have declined since the event. However, other individuals familiar with the situation stated there is no evidence that his health emergency has impacted his decision-making for his business ventures. The Dodgers organization has declined to comment on the matter.

A spokesperson for TWG Global issued a statement to The Wall Street Journal defending Walter's capabilities, asserting, "Mark has the business acumen and judgment required to lead the company as he has done for more than 30 years. For anyone to suggest otherwise is factually inaccurate. He has the full support of shareholders, clients and business partners."

Walter's influence in the sports world is substantial. He, along with Guggenheim Baseball Management, acquired the Dodgers in May 2012, transforming the franchise from bankruptcy to a dynasty over the subsequent decade. More recently, in October 2025, Walter purchased a majority stake in the Los Angeles Lakers for a record $10 billion.

Walter's public appearances have recently drawn attention. Last week, he accompanied the Dodgers on their visit to the White House to celebrate their 2025 World Series title. During the ceremony, there was reportedly a moment of confusion when Walter approached the podium to speak, an interaction that Dodgers manager Dave Roberts reportedly intervened in.
